It Up - Reggaeton Style
By Chen Lizra of Latidos Productions
Reggaeton is the latest and hottest
dance in the Latin dancing community. It’s entering
all of our Latin clubs and penetrating our lives both locally
and in every corner of the world. It’s considered as
the Latin hip-hop, but unlike the North American hip-hop,
the Latin one is an expression of sensuality and sexuality.
In Cuba, you see couples dancing,
rubbing against each other in a way that makes you wonder
what they leave for behind their bedroom doors. But what is
also evident is how naturally it comes to them. Unlike the
awkward feeling that many North Americans hold about their
bodies and expressed sexuality, the Cubans get a kick out
of expressing it freely and push it to the provocative extreme
joke. It’s their form of play and fun.
Walking on the streets of Havana,
day and night, Reggaeton is blasted from just about every
boom-box, in homes, from bicycle taxis etc. It’s very
common to see girls standing outside their homes, bored, too
hot to be inside and just grinding casually, while observing
the people passing by.
But don’t be mistaken, dancing
Reggaeton with someone brings out the sexual intent and if
you’re not interested, elegantly dance away, or in a
matter of seconds you’ll find yourself in an uncomfortable
situation. On the other hand, if you like the guy, this just
might be your ticket as you playfully seduce him.
If while reading this you’re
already contemplating your trip to Cuba, you’re in luck.
Latidos Productions is bringing all of this to your door step,
offering Reggaeton classes - for women only! The classes are
rich with Cuban Folklore like Son, Cuban Mambo and Rumba.
This is an opportunity to explore the women’s part,
before testing it on the dance floor. Beginner and intermediate
levels start this coming September 2006.
